“Factoring Sustainability in Building AI Systems” is the second episode of the IEEE Technology Center for Climate (ITCC) webinar series on “AI and Sustainability.” This webinar explored how sustainability considerations can be embedded in the design of AI systems.
While ethical considerations throughout the lifecycle of AI systems have been at the heart of responsible AI and AI-related regulatory frameworks, the aspect of sustainability is a more recent addition. Discussions about the environmental impact of AI at policy level start calling for an integration of sustainability-related considerations already at the design phase of AI systems rather than an after-thought.
Such a design thinking approach may include a wide range of techniques, from traditional process optimization, and performance engineering to business decisions which may impact the use of resources.
In this webinar, speakers explored the degree to which sustainability considerations affect business and design decisions around designing and developing AI systems. Starting with the building blocks of AI systems and low-hanging fruits of sustainable AI, and where there is more work to do. the webinar assembled a unique blend of expertise around this panel, from seasoned experts in the sustainable AI space to the voice of youth and young professionals who can give us their perspective on the subject.
