The Practical and Scalable Implementation of a Circular Economy event is an online event co-organised by the IEEE Technology Center for Climate (ITCC) and Reuters Events on 24 January 2024, 14:00 CET I 08:00 ET, as part of the webinar series Empowering The Green Tech Revolution: From Design to Deployment. The webinar looks at efforts currently underway by policy makers, industry and consumers to support the transition to a circular economy.

Sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products is the definition of a circular economy, the Digital Product Passport, designed by the European Commission, is an example of a scheme to build transparency and support circularity by inventory data throughout a product’s lifecycle, from material sourcing to their re-use or recycling.

Circularity and sustainability are becoming part of regulatory requirements in Europe and due to the nature of value chains having a global impact. What are the different frameworks that encourage a circular economy? Are these efforts enough or are they only a drop in the ocean and more efforts would be needed to implement circularity across industries and value chains? And what are the business and technical implications, from design to reuse?  And what steps are taken by industry players from a technical point of view to be ready for a circular model?

The shift towards sustainability and circularity needs to be supported by innovative approaches throughout the product lifecycle, education and training to support the development of corresponding skills. Besides regulation, technology and corporate strategy, how can we incentivize a behavioral shift of consumers to support this transition from a linear to a circular economy?

This webinar brings at the table thought-leaders from IEEE, industry and other leading institutions to look at how building a circular economy needs a global and concerted effort from all stakeholders involved, systems- and design- thinking to build circular, resilient and sustainable economies.
